Thursday, 23 July 2015 - Impeccably bred stallion Musket sired his first-stakes winner in the LR Belmont Classic (2200m) on Saturday. His first-crop Sunspeed stayer Dark Musket nailed odds-on favourite North Ridge (Danehill Express) by a nose in a race that has launched the careers of numerous stars since its inception in 1996. “He went a bit wide on the corner and had to do it the hard way,” trainer Graeme Ballantyne said. “Everything he’s done, he’s handled on his ear.”

Thursday, 4 June 2015 - Dark Musket will face his biggest test to date in the Westspeed Hcp (1400m) at Belmont this weekend. The Musket three year-old finished powerfully to win over shorter trips at Bunbury (1000m) and Belmont (1300m) in April – May. “He’s stepping up to open company on Saturday,” trainer Graeme Ballantyne admitted. “It’s a big ask but the 1400 metres will suit.”

The Dubawi mare is raced by Eddie Rigg and Ron Sayers and is coming off a close third in the LR Hannans Hcp in Kalgoorlie. She flew from the tail of the field to get with a length of Sireeze last week and looks well-placed in the Macau Hcp (1650m) at Belmont this Saturday.

The Danehill Express gelding had been in work since joining her stable in November apart from a short break after the G2 WATC Derby in April. “I haven’t got much choice now,” Harding said after watching him bolt in by three lengths. “I don’t think the owners would let me tip him out anyway!”

Owner Eddie Rigg joined forces with Yarradale Stud’s Ron Sayers to shuttle War Chant to Australia in 2011. The son of Danzig returned to Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky last month and the businessmen are hoping he will be back for a fourth Sunspeed book in 2014.
