Winners are Grinners at Cambana Lodge

Tuesday, 21 September 2021 | Peter Fernie has a proven record giving Perth gallopers a confidence-booster in Kalgoorlie and that know-how appears to be working with his latest winner American Grin.

The All American gelding had been runner-up at Bunbury, Pinjarra and as an odds-on favourite at Ascot earlier this year with Durrant Racing.  He was sent to the Goldfields and Fernie found the key leading into the Widdesons Hire Service Maiden (1600m) on Sunday.

American Grin (pictured) started a $2.25 favourite and connections had all the bases covered after booking Willie Pike.  Settled in the running line, he eased out three-wide into the straight and then knuckled down to a workmanlike two-length victory.

He can keep winning before the Kalgoorlie round concludes on October 30 and then follow the lead of horses like All American gelding Double Rush.  He recently converted a Fernie kick-start at Cambana Lodge into city success for Pearce Racing.

American Grin (4g All American – Scenic Grin by Blackfriars) is a homebred for Stan Quinlivan and is bred on the same cross as Kallaroo (LR Fairetha Stakes).  His dam won four races at Ascot and Belmont sporting Quinlivan’s purple and white diamond silks.

Second-dam Scenic Smile (Scenic) brings black-type to the family through her older half-relations Kim Uma (LR Queen’s Plate) and Load And Lockett (G3 Bunbury Cup).

All American (Red Ransom) has sired 17 individual winners of 30 races from his first crop conceived in WA.  He is currently standing for a $5,500 (inc GST) service fee at Geisel Park.

Hoofnote:  Champion All American filly Yankee Rose was represented by her first winner when Romneya led all the way in a Nakayama Newcomer (1600m) on Sunday.  The Deep Impact (Jpn) filly was sold for the equivalent of AUD2.75million at the 2019 JRHA Foal Sale.
